A study at Vanderbilt University Medical Center found that an AI model, VSAIL, effectively identifies suicide risk in neurology clinics by analyzing electronic health records. Involving 7,732 patient visits, the model produced 596 automated alerts. Interruptive alerts prompted risk assessments in 42% of cases, compared to 4% with passive notifications. While effective, researchers caution against alert fatigue and suggest further studies to enhance risk detection across medical fields for better suicide prevention.
