TrueMedia.org, a Seattle-based nonprofit focused on deepfake detection, will shut down its service on January 13 and open-source its technology due to high maintenance costs. Founder Oren Etzioni, a notable AI expert, indicated this decision aligns with the organization's original mission for the 2024 elections. Although a predicted surge of disinformation did not occur, Etzioni warns that society is still unprepared for potential future threats from generative AI.
